I love taking advantage of the fun events happening in downtown Atlanta, whether it is going to the Pride parade, the Fall Festival in Candler Park, or iceskating in Midtown. Last spring, I went to a Fermentation Festival with my friends in Piedmont Park and had the best time. It was so fun to engage with the larger Atlanta community while listening to live music, drinking kombucha, and trying other unusual fermented foods.
I absolutely love going to the Emory Farmers Market every Tuesday. Local vendors from Atlanta cover Cox Bridge, with stands selling anything from fresh fruit, honey, baked goods, coffee, organic produce, and Indian food. I started visiting one really kind lady every Tuesday to by fresh produce for the week. She owns a small farm and sells delicious butternut squash, sweet potato, broccoli, and lettuce. In addition to supporting local farmers and businesses, we are able to use Dooley Dollars almost everywhere! I just love how every Tuesday the entire campus comes to the center of campus to enjoy amazing food, great weather, and each others company.
Doing homework in the Chemistry building, at a table outside of the new student center with friends, or walking in Lullwater reserve across the street.
During my sophomore year, I took a class called Food, Health, and Society with Dr. Quave. In a society that is growing increasingly dependent on artificial remedies and medication, we learned pathways through which natural drugs are made by plants and how they affect humans. We learned all about the chemicals in foods, properties of food, and access to food around the globe. This class also encouraged us to engage with the community and make a social impact, so I had the opportunity to plant trees, visit the Emory WaterHub, and try exotic medicinal foods and insects!
